A community full of rich history, a proud downtown, ample farmland, immense opportunity and some of the most genuine people you will ever meet – sounds like a typical small town rural community, right?
Part of that is correct – Farmington, Minnesota is a rural community – but with metro sophistication!
This is Just the Beginning
Located in Dakota County, which abuts the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul to the southeast, Farmington, Minnesota is the youngest community in the county with a growing population of just over 23,000 residents. Farmington has a median age of 35.1 and a median household income of nearly $115,000. The community has more than doubled its population since 2000! (And if you’re excited about that – that is the boring stuff – keep reading!) At 14.7 square miles in size, situated in the southeast metro of the Twin Cities of St. Paul and Minneapolis, we are poised for bold growth and change.
In the last year –
- Farmington built a team of sophisticated professionals
- Developed a community vision
- Initiated (and is close to completing) a mid-cycle Comprehensive Plan update to ensure future land use/infrastructure plans and systems are in place to support development
- Approved a TIF district to facilitate the development of its first new market-rate apartment in 30 years that will transform the downtown
- Launched the new Unexpectedly Bold marketing campaign
- Worked with brokers/site selectors to bring new investments to the community.
This is just the beginning.

Farmington has positioned itself to drive its own destiny. We are having real conversations about who we are, who we want to be and where we want to go. We are aligning ourselves with others who appreciate our vision and want to be part of Farmington’s story.
In the last year not only have we shown up – we have worked hard to articulate the investment/growth opportunities that we offer, and we have successfully brought incentives forward to deliver projects. Our elected officials have empowered Team Farmington to be bold and that is who we are today.
Farmington is poised for BOLD growth. We embrace what makes this community special (our people) and we seek to bring new investment to the community.
