About Us
The key advantage of the Sioux City metro's business environment is diversity. Because of its unique location at the confluence of Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota, business prospects have a choice of three economic development programs, three tax structures and regulatory environments of three states.
In 1988, local community and business leaders formed The Siouxland Initiative (TSI) to stimulate economic growth in the tri-state region. Three fund drives over the past ten years have raised nearly 9 million dollars from Sioux City metro communities and corporations to support the programs and staffing of TSI. The Siouxland Chamber of Commerce is responsible for administering the activities of the Initiative.

The primary functions of TSI are:

  • Attraction of businesses to Siouxland
  • Growth and retention of Siouxland business
  • Expansion of the Siouxland labor force
  • Development of industrial parks and speculative buildings
  • Attraction of additional air service
  • Development of community projects that enhance the quality of life

The Siouxland Initiative provides the following services to companies looking to expand in the Sioux City metro:

  • Research - compilation of information on the Siouxland area
  • Consulting - confidential consulting services to assist companies in their assessment of the Siouxland area
  • Loans - providing low interest loans to companies locating or expanding in Siouxland
  • Incentive Packages - development of financial incentive packages utilizing economic incentives available from the states of Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota and cities of Sioux City, South Sioux City and North Sioux City

Transportation & Shipping
With its centralized location, Siouxland cities have access to excellent air, rail, highway, Interstate, water and pipeline transportation networks. No major U.S. city is more than four hours away from the Siouxland area. Unlike single state locations, the tri-state location provides extraordinary options, choices and ease of accessibility to economical transportation, linking the region to Midwest, U.S. and world destinations.

Current Siouxland Highway Projects

Interstate 29
The goal of the I-29 improvement project is to enhance the safety and operation of Interstate 29 through Sioux City.  The project corridor is divided into three segements.  To find out more about the project including video animation of each segment, click here.

US Highway 20
US Highway 20, one of the very first coast-to-coast highways in the United States, starts in downtown Boston and travels through Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Wyoming, Idaho, and Oregon.

With just 90 miles of the four-lane project left to be completed in Iowa, statewide four-lane US Highway 20 will serve the rapidly expanding alternative energy industry growing in northwest Iowa and provide relief for overcrowded Interstate 80.  For more information regarding the US Highway 20 project, click here.  For an updated  list of US Highway 20 projects funded in the IDOT 5-Year Plan, click here.

Nebraska Highway 35
Nebraska Highway 35 Expressway is a 70-mile Planned Project for the Nebraska Expressway System.  This diagonal four-lane segment would connect the confluence of four-lane highways coming from the northeast into Sioux City, Iowa with Norfolk, Nebraska and the four-lane Highway 81 Expressway to Interstate 80.  The Planned 35 Expressway is a significant link that would provide four-lane expressway continuity in the Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa and Nebraska region and between national destinations.

The following information depicts the miles saved with the new diagonal route:

  • Sioux City to Colorado Springs, CO - 240 miles
  • Sioux City to Grand Island, NE - 96 miles
  • Sioux City to York, NE - 55 miles

Target Industries
There are many incentives to opening a business in the Siouxland area, including an excellent transportation system centered around Interstate 29, several full-service industrial parks, a skilled available workforce and utility infrastructure in place with excess capacity.

Another bonus for industry and business is the close proximity of business and industrial support services, including architects, contractors, and consulting engineers.

A Siouxland location offers significant benefits to companies in the following areas:

  • Biotechnology
  • Alternative Energy
  • Food processing/value added agriculture
  • Advanced manufacturing
  • Warehousing/distribution
  • Data processing, call centers, insurance services
  • Commercial aviation

Businesses have prospered in the Siouxland area and more are opening their doors each year. A great location, excellent support services, and a dedicated work ethic contribute to a bright economic future for Siouxland!

Location
The Siouxland Chamber of Commerce serves Sioux City and Sergeant Bluff, IA;
South Sioux City and Dakota City, NE;
North Sioux City and Dakota Dunes, SD and surrounding communities.

Located in the central part of the U.S., Siouxland offers an excellent quality-of-life and
outstanding business opportunities. Sioux City, twice named an All American City, is the "hub"
city of the Siouxland area.

Economic Development Initiatives
Financial incentives are available for both Siouxland businesses planning to expand their operations or for companies locating an operation in Siouxland. Incentives are available from our states, local communities, and The Siouxland Initiative.

Most of these assistance programs are designed to provide "gap" financing for business expansion or relocation. These programs can help reduce the project-lending risk provided by your commercial lender, and, in some circumstances, the availability of economic development funds might make it possible to obtain commercial lending for the project.
