A simplistic lifestyle is the number one motivator of many businesses and residents when choosing Mount Carmel as their place to call home. Road transportation measured in minutes from State Highways to the Interstates or US Highways is a luxury that Mount Carmel offers. Mainline rail service provided by Norfolk Southern runs 28 trains per day through Mount Carmel with several businesses utilizing this service as an economical mode of transportation.
Due to the ease of transportation, our workforce is not just measured by our city population of 8,000 or our county population of approximately 13,000. County borders spill over with workers willing to commute from a 40 square mile area. Our non-congested highways, allow commutes across counties in Southeastern Illinois and Southwestern Indiana to be shorter than most commutes within large city limits.
Abundant natural resources are available to meet your business needs. Industries seeking high quantity and quality water sources will find that Mount Carmel has a natural aquifer well system. With an excess of over 1.4 mgd produced and expansion well sites available, in addition to the over 8 mgd source of raw water from Wabash River, water requirements are met when you chose to locate near Mount Carmel. Coal and oil resources are also in vast supply throughout our area with two coal mines and oil production throughout most of the county.
Excellent public secondary and elementary schools are located in Mount Carmel as well as a private Catholic elementary school and Christian preschool. Wabash Valley College, a member of the Illinois Eastern Community College District, offers programs for traditional transfer students along with a variety of technical and certificate programs. The first-class machine shop and manufacturing trades technology program offers students hands on learning and internships with various area manufacturing facilities.
Community pride in our schools, parks, businesses, homes, and each other brings the city together. Our city has the ability to set goals for the future and accomplish tasks that improve our quality of life in Mount Carmel. Making the decision to start or relocate a business or home is difficult, but Mount Carmel welcomes you to view our lifestyle and the resources that we have to offer.
